In November of 2018, Derek Kitchen was elected to represent the 2nd district in the Utah State Senate, becoming the youngest active member of the Utah Legis- lature.
Prior to assuming his role in the Legislature, Senator Kitchen was a member of the Salt Lake City Council representing District 4, where he concurrently served as the Chair of the Salt Lake City Redevelopment Authority. Professionally, he co-founded and currently operates two businesses in Salt Lake City – Laziz Foods and Laziz Kitchen – a distribution company and a restaurant specializing contemporary Middle Eastern food.
Senator Kitchen met with Ambassador Branstad in May at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing with other elected officials from the U.S. and is looking forward to re- connecting with the Ambassador.
Senator Kitchen serves the community as a member of the board for both the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, and The Leonardo: Museum of Science, Art, and Technology. He received his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of Utah, and recently received an Executive Education Certificate in State Government from Harvard University.
